Hey everybody,
I’m doing a website for my client right now. It is in the design stage. Why can’t I use the upload file form? it asks for a business plan. I get it. But where does it make sense when I haven’t finished the website yet and am just trying to design my forms?
Couldn’t say, but I suspect it’s related to service provisioning costs or the potential for abuse.
In this case, perhaps WF had issues with users creating inappropriate sites that captured inappropriate uploads, not a good look and difficult to police.
But that’s just a theory, Webflow support could tell you more.
There are other file upload services you can use that integrate well, and that a lot of users prefer due to file size options and security controls. These also do not require a business plan, though they are paid services once you exceed the free plan limits.
Uploadcare is a popular choice, but there are tons of them.
Yes, you can only add a file upload element AFTER your site is on a business hosting plan.
The processs is like:
- build your form and the rest of your site first
- sign up for business hosting
- add and style your file upload fields
- publish to staging or live
But, you can even use a button element to help you create classes and style the upload UI for preview purpose, so you can defer paying for hosting until as late as possible.
The button looks like this:

Thank you, I appreciate your answer. I feel like Webflow sometimes makes things harder, even though it’s supposed to make them simpler.
