Migrating and Redesigning an Old Website in Webflow While Keeping the Same Domain

Hello everyone, I’m a programmer and recently switched to Webflow. As a beginner in Webflow, I have a few questions regarding my current project. I have been assigned to completely redesign and rebuild an existing but outdated website. The original site was built with simple code and no frameworks. My goal is to recreate it using Webflow. One crucial requirement is that the domain of the old website must remain the same, as it is linked on other pages, and changing it could cause issues.

Here are my questions:

  1. How can I migrate the old website to Webflow while keeping the same domain?
    My plan is to take the old website offline and set up a maintenance page first. What’s the best way to do this?

  2. How can I redesign and rebuild the website in Webflow while keeping the existing domain unchanged?

  3. How can I test the new website while the maintenance page remains online? I want to ensure that I can work on and test the new version without affecting the maintenance page or the live site.

I’d appreciate any help and tips!

If I understand correctly, the original site will be 100% replaced with the new Webflow site?

In that case you’d typically approach it like this-

  • Don’t touch the old site, just leave it as is for now
  • Build the new site in Webflow
  • Do all of your testing and review on your Webflow staging URL which will be something like mysite.webflow.io

Once everything is ready;

  • Add a Site Plan to your Webflow site
  • Update your DNS so that it points to your new Webflow site
