Transferring Client's Domain from Squarespace to Webflow

Hi everyone,

I’ve developed a new site for a client on Webflow. The client previously had their website and domain hosted on Squarespace, with the domain purchased directly through Squarespace.

Now, I need to point their existing domain to the new Webflow site. I’m considering two options:

  1. Transfer the domain from Squarespace to a third-party registrar (like GoDaddy or Namecheap) and then connect it to Webflow.
  2. Keep the domain with Squarespace and update the DNS settings to point to Webflow.

I’m looking for advice on which method is more efficient and reliable, especially to ensure minimal downtime. If anyone has experience with this process or can share best practices, I’d appreciate your insights.

Thanks in advance!

Domain transfers can take a few days to a week, during which at some point, your Squarespace will go down.

Unless you want to check in every few hours, your best bet is probably to leave it where it is if that costs you nothing extra, add the site plan to Webflow and then add the domain and config the DNS. That will make pretty much a seamless handover from SS to WF.
