CMS Collection Pages Won't Publish

I’ve added a bunch of Events in my CMS Collection titled “Events”. They’re queued up as Drafts, but when I hit publish, they stay as drafts. Anyone have an idea why these won’t publish?

Drafts stay Drafts, even when you publish. You need to stage them for publish by going into the individual item and use the drop-down that’s integrated within the Save button.

This solution confused me. How can I save an individual item when it’s part of a collection? What is an individual item anyway? Is it an element or a field?
