Publishing for editors – Staging vs Live Site

Hello, is it at all possible for website editors to publish only to the staging URL instead of both the staging and live websites? This continues to be an issue for our clients who become editors after sites are launched.

There does not seem to be an ability for editors to test changes before they go live, or to create partial changes when multiple people are editing (including design teams) in which some changes can go live while others should remain private on the staging server until ready.

Can we expect this is in the dev pipeline for the future?

Not in the legacy editor. But in the designer’s edit mode, you can do this now, and mid 2025, all legacy editor users will be automatically migrated to client seats and the designer’s edit mode at no added cost.

In designer editor mode, you can just publish the site to staging only, which is what you’d do for non-CMS content.

For CMS content like a blog article you can also do it;

  • Make your edits in the CMS
  • Change the status of the CMS item from draft changes to stage for publish
  • Then publish the site to staging only

Thank you so much – with the new design/edit mode will it still be possible to restrict access to the editor accounts for only editing and not design mode? That will cause problems for the less technical people that we do not want to give design access to but they should still have the capability of not interfering with partial design updates that are not ready to publish.

Yes, you can use that mode now- just switch your designer to Build mode.
