Portfolio website with modal windows

Hey! First of all I want to say I am a total beginner in webflow and website creation. I am creating my personal portfolio with design projects. When a viewer wants to open one of my projects to learn more about it I want a modal/pop up window to show up with more photos/videos. Basically something like this: https://jasonyuan.design/.
My question is, is it a proper way to design a website? I know the lighter the webpage is the better, and with so many pop ups containing a lot of the content it will probably be really heavy right?
