How to select a different element to animate using new interactions panel

Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know how to select a different element when animating in the timeline.
I have a section that I have added a scroll trigger to and want to select the background div that needs to change as the section scrolls into view but if I select this element it closes the animation and takes me back to the start.
Is there another way to select the element without leaving the interactions panel?
