Adding Sort/ Filter function to the items without CMS

Hi,
Please help! I have a collection of items(not CMS) with different size, something like in pinterest. I want to add some filters and sorting to it. Is it possible by adding attributes to the items or do I need to have some custom code for it.
Appreciate all your suggestions and guidelines.
