Referencing Collections

I can’t seem to figure out how to reference my collections. Does anyone know of a good detailed explanation or tutorial that could help me understand this. I try to reference the name from the list, but when I select the name field (with the little arrow indicating that its a reference field), the text box goes blank.

On References, what are you trying to reference. Please explain a bit more as to what you are trying to get at?
