Help nesting cms items inside cms dropdowns

Hi! This feels like it should be very simple but for some reason I can’t get it to work.

I’m working on a portfolio page for a journalist. I want to nest the stories she’s written into dropdowns for each publication she’s written for. Example: a Nat Geo dropdown with all the Nat Geo stories she’s written in the dropdown list.

For ease of use, I don’t want her to go into the “portfolio sources” collection. I just want her to go into the “portfolio stories” collection and choose/add the source as a reference to each story.

I’m struggling because, when the top level collection is the “portfolio stories”, every story populates a new dropdown making there be multiple dropdowns with the same category name… like the read-only like below.

But when the top level collection is the “portfolio source”, I’m forced to create a multi-reference field in the “portfolio source” collection where she’d have to go in and enter every story that fits in that category, which is not user-friendly.

What am I missing? Is there a simple, webflow-native solution for this?

I believe I understood this right. You will need to have a collection inside of a collection. Parent collection is “Portfolio Sources” and the child collection is “Portfolio Stories”. Hope that helps.
