Can I leave empty cells between used cells in grid element?

I’m currently using a 16 column grid. I want a div element to use the first 5 columns and then a second div element using the last 3 columns, with all the cells in between empty - is this possible?

The only thing I can think of is putting an empty div block between the two divs but would this be considered bad practice or would it be fine to do?

It’s possible with manual positioning and that is what it exists.
