Best practice for changing page name/path/directory after publishing

Dear Community,

I hope this is the right subforum for my question:

I’m working on our companies website and my boss has asked me again now (while we are changing some contents), to change some of the URLs and specific pages names.

For example one page is called “/anwendung/industrie”
which should become /anwendungen/industriebereiche

How do I go about this the best way when everything is already published and the conents indexed and working with google search? I don’t want us to lose all that progress or do anything stupid.

As I understood in the past when he asked me to change something, I would change it and then do a normal 301 redirect.

Is that the best practice of achieving that? Other than of course having a sound naming strategy when creating the website and before publishing it lol
(many mistakes were made, as this is the first project ever)

Regards,
Hendrik
