Background videos not auto-playing?

I have noticed some issues with auto-playing videos, particularly in Safari. Background videos below the fold, or not visible when the page is loaded, will not auto-play and just show the first frame placeholder image. Background videos above the fold work without a problem. All work fine in Chrome. I know the new version of Safari has the auto-play disable feature, but I have this turned off and like I mentioned, videos above the fold do auto-play.

Has anyone else had this issue and is there a solution? Any help is appreciated!!

Are your videos in webm or ogg format?

I believe Safari has an issue with these kind of videos and it simply displays a static image instead of playing the video. If you use MP4s do the videos work fine?
