Why is Google displaying my title tag differently than I entered it?

I’ve optimized the SEO for my website, but after indexing on Google, the changes don’t appear as expected. I entered “Sociaal verantwoordelijk incasseren | CollectMasters,” but on Google, it displays as “CollectMasters: Sociaal verantwoordelijk incasseren.” Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Google takes titles, METAs, etc as suggestions only. It will create the SERP listing it chooses to.

So, there’s no definitive way to convince Google to use my preferred title tag?

Best advice I can offer is for you to head over to Google Search Central and learn what factors are within your control and what they recommend and do that.

Also, this forum has had many similar topics on this very subject. Feel free to use the search function of the forum for additional reading here.

Here is my suggestion about Google displaying your Meta Title differently from the one you originally had on your site :point_down:t2:.

As others have said, it is true that Google sets the Title Tag based on a variety of factors, however, there are a few options you can try to suggest Google to change it:

  1. Go to Google Search Console and request a re-index of that specific page. Then wait 2-3 weeks to see if it changes, if not:
  2. Change your Meta Title to something very slightly different, but that you are still happy with, and retry Step 1. Then wait 2-3 weeks to see if it changes, if not:
  3. Change your H1 to be similar (or the same) to the Meta Title, and retry Step 1. Then wait 2-3 weeks to see if it changes, if not… you’re out of luck as Google just doesn’t want to change it :joy:!

We have done this with a few of our sites and our client sites successfully (and also unsuccessfully on a small few), so it’s worth the try.
