I’ve just been brought onto a not for profit board and in transitioning to do the new website, the old person has taken down the site when I handed him his last cheque, and seems to not want to hand over the website files.
Does anyone know the law in Canada or have dealt with this in the past?

As mentioned previously, I have returned all property belonging to < NOT-4-PROFIT ORG < to you including images, copy, materials and any files. The website itself, images that I created and copy that I created are the property of < hist company name > as per copyright.
He was paid to build the site and then somehow also got the OK to charge $300 for web hosting, 4 + years of making easy month every month and to behave like this, vindictive almost…I dunno
Last thought, who does this to a Not for Profit. Thanks for any input or help
If he was paid to create the site, then 100% of what he created for the site including methods invented to accomplish tasks, images, code, etc. etc. are the SOLE property of the entity that paid him.
Of course, sounds like the guy isn’t cool, so good luck getting anything at all from him no matter what the law says. You aren’t going to hire a lawyer and he knows that.
Sorry, I may not be fully understanding the email , is there a chance you are saying that you will not be providing < Not-4-Profit> it’s website files moving forward?

Wow, you’d think that when a new board comes on a Not for profit, there is a chance they bring in their resources and people, and being told that we appreciate you for your services but we are going in a new direction would be more maturely handled, instead of negative vindictive actions against a not for profit. Yikes, for those reading this here are some links that may shed some light on this practice and what you may want to do at the start of the project or contract signing
Not for Profit can’t find the old files, and he says it’s not his duty to provide me with a backup of the original invoice. Obviously he is acting like a sour kid!
