What's the difference between Update Item and Update Live Item via Zapier?

Curious if there are any advantages to Update Item, as most tutorials and references seem to use Update Live Item

@Alex_Avery update item doesn’t publish the item, it can be used for things that need to stay in draft

Thanks for the reply! Is there a way to “Publish All Drafts” with a single zap?

My issue is that I want to update content via Zapier and then preview it on a staging site, but Zapier/Webflow doesn’t allow for your staging & live sites to ever be out of sync.

My current plan is to “Update Item” as I work on the content, and then was hoping to “Publish All Drafts” to my staging site to do QA before publishing live. I’d like to not have to use a zap on each of the 100+ items that I may be updating.

Maybe another way of asking the question is “Does Update Item save everything as a ‘draft’, or does it ‘stage for publish’ as well?” If it stages for publish, can you then “publish” via Zapier with one zap, or does that require going into Webflow?

If you use the ‘update live item’, it will publish directly to the live site so any items added (say a blog post) will be available on the website so there’s no need to go into webflow and publish the site again.

I have been seeing problems with “update live item” in Zapier, and also Integromat.
Items get published in the Collection, also with status “Published” but it is in fact not published to the site! (only when doing another manual publish, the item will appear live on the website).

I’ve had this problems for a month or two now.
In Integromat, I’ve ‘solved’ this by removing “live = true” and add another extra step “publish site”.

In Zapier however, this action is not available.
Does anybody have any answers regarding this change? (like approx. 2 months ago and a year before “update live item” worked as advertised, it updated and published the item correctly.

I can tell this new problem is real, since i have seen it on multiple webflow sites, also with both Zapier and Integromat, so it’s likely there was a change in Webflow.

I have a similar issue with zapier “Live item update” - the live item update is happening successfully. The issue I have is I am referencing the updated collection items from another collection and this is not being updated on the live, I have to publish to see the referenced dynamic fields update on the live site.

This works everywhere else in my site - and this one worked once I believe and then stopped working. Is this a bug with collections and reference fields @sarahfrison maybe you have insight?

This did work like a year or so for me, but the last few months it doesn’t anymore.

did you find a solution for this with zapier?

No, you?
Only solution i know/have used is using Integromat - which has a separate (extra) action to publish a Webflow site. I put that in the end, after a sync was done.
It’s by far ideal - since everything gets published then (also changes you have besides the updated CMS items).

I hoped someone would have jumped in here already, since i though many are using zapier/update live items.

Yeah that isn’t ideal but its better than the current situation.

I’m going to have a further look into it, i’m wondering if there is a way to send a separate api call to Webflow to publish the CMS items or something similar.

And the strange thing with my issue is that it was working perfectly fine and then it suddenly stopped so i’m wondering if has reach a limit of some sort and maybe thats why not many people are having this issue.

good point - maybe!
Please let me know if you find out some fix or place with more info!
