Transfer a Site with Localization?

Hello Webflow Community,

I have a question that I couldn’t find clearly defined in the Webflow documentation.

For a project, I’m using Webflow’s Localization feature for the first time, and so far, everything is working well. I developed and manage the site myself, but it’s for a client. The client has Editor access to the Workspace and can manage the content independently. So far, so good.

However, it’s possible that in 1–2 years, the client may want to create their own Workspace to fully manage the project themselves. This means I will need to transfer the project to them. I understand that to do this, I have to cancel the hosting plan, which will temporarily make the site unavailable.

Now, here’s my question: To downgrade the hosting to the Starter Plan before transferring, I first need to cancel Localization. Does this mean that all translations and settings for the localized pages will be lost, and the client will have to manually re-enter all multilingual content after the transfer? I find this hard to believe because it seems very destructive.

I’d really appreciate any clarification on this.

Thanks in advance!
Daniel

Webflow has a seamless site transfer feature, so you should not need to cancel the site plan.

Appreciate your fast reply. I just read this on the webflows documentation site:
“You can’t transfer a site with an active paid Site plan — unless you’re using [client payments], which supports seamless transfers.”

So i have to enable client payment first. Still not quite sure if that supports Localization since Webflow is never really mentioning this..

Correct, you’d basically recreate the site plan and invite the client to pay for it. Once that’s done, you can transfer the entire site to them.

I’ve not tested each scenario, but support indicates that it’s quite comprehensive, so my undertstanding is add ons like localization, plus redirects and domain names are all part of the seamless transfer.

Since you’re talking 2 years away, I’m hopeful that that first piece, the ability to change who is paying for an active site plan, will improve by then.
