Nested collection displaying duplicate entries

I have a CMS collection of schools, and in that collection I have a multi-reference field containing open days the school is running. On my page I list the schools as a collection, and inside that I have a nested collection which should list the open days. As a test, I have added 2 open days which a school links to, but because the number of items the nested collection is set to show is 5, it seems that Webflow duplicates the number of collection items in the nested collection in order to display 5. So now on my page I have the school with 5 items, 4 of them just duplicate entries with exactly the same information. I don’t seem to be able to adjust the “Show” field to have it simply list the number of linked items in the multi reference field.

Unfortunately I’m not able to share a live link, but I would really appreciate some support with this.

Hey @wrangelpeaz,

I believe the Nested collection item setting to show 5 or 10 items will not lead to such issue of displaying duplicate entries rather than just showing how many ever items are linked to the parent collection.

I tried testing out your use-case in a dummy site just to confirm and I was able to show only 2 items that were linked in the multi-reference field and it did not show any duplicates no matter what the number of nested items settings I set.

The issue seems to be something else here. In case you can’t share the site link or read-only link of the site, can you share some screenshots of the CMS items, the settings you have on the collection and nested lists to understand what might have caused this behavior?

Something to double-check would be to ensure that the ‘Empty State’ in the collection list is not mapped to any collection fields and you can additionally set the filter of the parent collection item to be as follows just to avoid the empty state element for testing purposes.

Not sure if this will bring you closer to the solution, but might be worth a try based on the guess I can make without having context of the setup you have on the site. Let me know if the issue still remains and if you can provide any more information about the structure so that we can help troubleshoot it.

Hi @AJ_Dev, thanks so much for taking the time to write such a comprehensive response, and for trying to replicate the issue on your end. Really appreciate that.

Here are some screenshots:

The parent collection, a list of schools containing multi-ref field “Städte”, a list of towns where the open days will take place.

”Child” collection of towns containing multi-ref items

On-page setup, focused on the parent collection. Here you can see that despite Darmstadt only existing (and being linked to) once by the parent collection item, it is displaying four times in the collection list. By the way, I don’t have an “any” option to filter multi reference items, so I just chose “contains ‘Berlin’”, but it doesn’t change anything in any case.

Let me know if there are any other screenshots I can provide to assist.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Alexander,

Can you expand your inner collection list fully, and screenshot what you have in there?

Hi @memetican, sure:

I’m fairly certain I’m seeing duplicate content in there, but click on that item element [1] and look at the purple border [2]. When you have the item selected the purple border will only be around the collection item itself.

That will tell you if I’m correct- visually it looks like 5 items, but it is probably just 1.

For example, you can see multiple date part constructions here;

Share your readonly designer link to the page if you need more specific help untangling your CMS item setup.

@wrangelpeaz, Welcome.

+1 to what memetican said above, is the live site also showing duplicate entries?

If you can share a read-only link that could be of great help in troubleshooting this as well.

Hello both,

I deleted the CMS item and added it again, and seemingly everything was sorted. I have no idea why it was appearing four times, but simply re-adding it solved everything. There was certainly only ever one occurance of it in the CMS, so I’m not sure what was going on. In any case, thanks to both of you for dedicating time to helping me out with this. It’s much appreciated.

Had this happen once where duplicates only cleared after re-adding the multi-ref items , likely just a CMS sync glitch. If it happens again, try un-linking/re-linking the referenced items instead of deleting the parent.
