Navigation for large sites

Need some ui/ux inspiration. I’m about to redesign companys website. We recently bought another company with lots of products. The navigation today is typical drop downs and breadcrumbs. I’m leaning towards making micro sites for each product and a additional navigation for each micro site.

So give me your thoughts and examples on good navigation for large sites with lot of information and pages.

I don’t have anything specific in mind but I keep adding nice sectioned design things in a bookmark. Here it is, maybe you’ll find something interesting in it.
