Interactions in components - GRRR - please help!

Sorry, but this is doing my head in…

I just want to add an interaction to a component, in my case a header, but I can’t because I can’t link it to an element outside the component - another component - the mobile menu.
I have tried the dropdown - Add an interaction - but that doesn’t work either.
Do I really have to unlink the component, add the interaction, then create a new component to all my pages?

I’ve run into this problem too.
I created a duplicate of the component. Unlinked that one instance. Created my interaction that affects the elements outside of the component.
Go back and open the original component and apply the interaction so that it’s applied throughout your site.
