Inserting a select drop down field in a collection list

Hi all I thought this would be easy but I’m missing something :smiley:

I want to add a simple status field with start/finish / on-hold options to a collection list. I don’t want to use CMS field as the 2nd part of this is creating a simple charts based on status (and that appears to be very tricky)

I added in a dropdown field from Components but that only allows me to do links i.e. for a drop down menu. Where am I going wrong?

Tried also to create an option field at CMS level but unfortunately you don’t get the select option on the actual page.

Is the only way to do thing using a forum? Seems a bit clunky to me.
