How do I know a template is CMS compatible?

As I’m sifting through the dozens and dozens of templates, there does not seem to be an easy way to identify if a template is CMS compatible. The only way I could figure out to determine this on my own was to open the template in webflow and then see if there are any collections in the CMS section. And even then I was told it still might be CMS compatible even if there aren’t any collections.

Is there seriously NO WAY to quickly determine if a template is CMS compatible? Is there a list?

Hi Jon,

Are you coming from a WP background?
This might help clarify things for you-

  • All templates are CMS-compatible. You just add collections.
  • If a template has CMS collections, then you will only be able to host it with a CMS-level site plan or above. On occasion people like a template’s styling, but are just building a simple, basic site… in that case they need to remove those CMS collections before they can use a Basic Site Plan.
  • To determine if a template will be good for your project, always open it an examine the CMS structure. The question you want to answer is “Is this a good starting point”.
  • In Webflow, anything can be changed- there is no such thing as template lock-in the way WP users might relate to, where theme X has these features and theme Y does not so you’d have to hire a dev to add them.

For some years after the CMS was introduced, there used to be a way to filter to #cms templates… but it’s such a fundamental system to the Webflow platform that most templates use the CMS now.
