Designer or whatever its called

I didnt know where to post this but im hoping it reaches the right ears. And let me start by saying I love webflow, im going out of my way to positively improve the platform with a somewhat negative review of a specific feature/A/B Test.

Alright, lets start the rant. Whoever changed the designer’s name into a nonsensical button needs to change it back or finalise the bloody thing now. Now, to open the designer, you click on ‘open in webflow’… what the hell doesnt that even mean? So now, ‘webflow’ is the designer? Webflow is the platform, and within it is the designer. You’re promoting an infinite loop logic. Webflow within webflow within webflow. Thats like me saying, go to webflow, then open webflow, then click on webflow. For example, now all my clients past tutorials are invalid. They are going to look for the designer forever.

Ive been using webflow for years so I have grown accustomed to understanding the ‘designer’ is where we do our development and work on the site. But after their recent rebranding and upgrades, its like that are experimenting with different terms or names for it. Im not sure why, maybe there was some data metrics saying people didnt respond well to ‘designer’. When I saw it not so long ago ‘open in webflow’ I already thought it was confusing but today i double checked myself because I was questioning whether that was going to take me to the designer. If it wasnt for muscle memory, and the fact that the button always stays in the same place from the main website settings panel, then I would have been lost because wtf is ‘open in webflow’, on how to get back to the designer.

Perhaps me doing this is literally what you want, to hear positive or negative feedback on the phrasing of the design dashboard. I understand, its the best way to see what the people want. Agitate them and get some honest feedback.

However, its reasonable to state that going from ‘designer’ to ‘open in webflow’ makes no sense. Maybe it makes sense in some over-analysed and over-exaggerated scenarios, but realistically just stick to simplicity, ‘open in webflow’ makes no sense to the common individual. I, and im sure many people want clear structure,

  • Settings
  • Designer/Developer
  • Dashboard
  • Profile
    etc etc

But ‘Open in Webflow’ is definitely not apart of that structure.

You’re not the first to complain, but I’ll just say, I can see why the dashboard team struggled with that. An editor wouldn’t look for “designer”. Neither would a marketer, who’s used to “build mode”.

Difficult to make one button that’s intuitive for all users.

That said, I don’t know many editors or marketers who spend time in the dashboard. I’d prefer “Designer” as well.
