Can't remove symbol

Hi,

I can’t remove my navigation bar symbol even after having deleted all elements and links inside. Is anyone can help me, please?

Many thanks for your time given,
Aurelien

Here is my site Read-Only: https://preview.webflow.com/preview/dcproject?utm_medium=preview_link&utm_source=dashboard&utm_content=dcproject&preview=264a791c40b4a0aed19800d078ce1bfc&workflow=preview

Same for my site search bar…

Do you get an error when you select it within the navigator panel and hit your delete key? I wasn’t able to reproduce the problem—I could delete both of them on the read-only link.

Yes it say “can’t delete symbol root”. I tried again and it’s not working…

I removed every elements inside the 2 symbols. I don’t know why it’s not working. Is there is a solution, please?

Symbols shouldn’t require any elements within them to be removed before they can be deleted from a page—are you trying to delete the entire Symbol itself (in the Symbols panel) or just the instances?

I’d recommend you try clearing your cache and/or using an incognito window (with all extensions disabled) to see if that solves the problem.

Since I’m not able to reproduce the issue on my end it may be worth reaching out to Webflow Support in the meantime (if you haven’t already).

I would like to delete the entire symbol in the symbol panel. Yes, I will reach Webflow support as it’s start to be very annoying. Every time we made a change in our website their is an issue…

Ah okay, thanks for that clarification. In that case I think I can help out before you’ll need to contact support :slightly_smiling_face:

In order to delete the entire Symbol itself you’ll need to make sure that you remove all instances of it across your pages. The delete is intentionally greyed out in that panel for Symbols that are being used throughout the project:

While there isn’t an easy way to see which pages they’re used on, you can see how many are being used but chances are these were used on most (if not all pages) given they were probably a site-wide Symbol:

Let me know if you need any other help and I’ll record a short video illustrating the solution :+1:

Thank you for you time Mikeyevin. Actually, I can’t remove both. Basically, all elements has been remove from the symbole. After checking again, I can’t remove the instances inside both symbole which I guess stopping me to delete the entire symbole from the symbol panel.

Are you clicking into the Symbol first before trying to remove the Symbol instance itself? The error you’re getting when you try that way (“Cannot delete symbol root.”) is because you’re trying to delete the Symbol wrapper while inside of the same Symbol.

You’ll want to select the Symbol on the canvas (or in the Navigator panel) and delete it without opening that instance up—no need to first make sure everything inside is deleted.

Hi Mikeyevin,

Thank you very much for having taken the time to show me again with the video. Definitely more accurate and it’s working now. I managed to delete the symbols. Have a nice one

@Drover This bug is still around. When I delete the symbol instance and then go to the symbols tab, the instance keeps coming back.

Hey @David_Brown, Everything is on the above chat
