Best approach: Rich text or multiple text block + CSS

Hello everyone,

I’m currently learning Webflow and testing the CMS to build case studies for my projects. I’m not sure what the best content structure is for this kind of page:

  • Is it better to keep most of the content in one Rich text field, or split it into smaller CMS fields (title, intro, tags, sections, etc.)?

  • If Rich text is recommended, should I use one Rich text field for the entire page, or one Rich text field per section (each section = one idea + one heading)?

The reason I’m asking: I thought Rich text was the most flexible approach, but the styling workflow feels confusing.

Once the Rich text element is connected to a CMS rich text field, it seems like I can’t easily style nested elements unless I disconnect/reconnect, which makes iteration a bit painful.

I’ve also tried styling before connecting, but it still doesn’t feel convenient.

If you have best practices for structuring case studies in Webflow CMS (and when to use Rich text vs structured fields), I’d really appreciate your advice.

Also, if you have any recommended learning resources or documentation, I’d love to check them.

Thanks!

Hey there,

This video might help with styling Rich Text that is already connected to the CMS

There’s no single “right” choice between rich text and multiple text blocks…it all depends on how you want to organize your case studies. Rich text works best when your layout is fairly standard, and you’re mainly using H1–H5 headings, images, and paragraphs. See example below.

If you want to include other types of content, such as an accordion or a stats/metrics section, it may be better to use multiple elements rather than a single rich text block.

With that said, there are still ways to add additional styling to rich text if you want to get more creative. Check out Refokus’ Rich Text Enhancer to see how you can style a single rich text field.
