A tip on avoiding modern adblocker conflicts

I’ve seen this three times now on client projects, enough that I’ve added it to our internal best practices list.

If you have the sequence of letters “ads” in your site content, that content will likely get blocked / deleted from the page by neurotic ad blockers.

In particular, avoid it in-

  • Class names
  • ID’s
  • URLs that point to images or video

FWIW, ad blockers seem most sensitive when “ads” is at the start or end of a “word”, so a class name or domain name or path starting or ending with “ads” is more likely to be blocked.

Adblocker will just block it, or delete those elements from the page, without much notification- so users are very unlikely to know why your site’s not working.

Hope this saves someone some grief.
